A collaboration between a college and a health center may seem farfetched in the minds of many, but for a local university and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), a collaboration was the perfect opportunity. California State University, Los Angeles and ChapCare successfully intersected goals of educating college students on how they can become healthcare coverage advocates for themselves, their families and their communities.
On October 25, 2018, over 70 Cal State LA Students attended the Keep Your Coverage Health Summit. At the summit, the panel consisted of ChapCare’s Interim Chief Operations Officer Steven Abramson, Cal State LA’s Public Health Chair Dr. Walter Zelman, and Young Invincibles Director of Partnerships and Organizing Kristin McGuire. The panelists discussed the history of the ACA, healthcare coverage options for millennials, and how young adults can encourage others to enroll during the Covered California open enrollment period.
“This forum served two very important purposes,” said Dr. Zelman. “First, it reminded students why they need insurance and the risks of not having it. Second, it reviewed the key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, how those provisions impact them as young adults, and what the election outcomes might mean for the future of the Act.”
”The Affordable Care Act is a once in a lifetime event,” said Mr. Abramson. “As a key healthcare safety net provider in Los Angeles County, we want to continue to forge partnerships with key community stakeholders to ensure that the hard-to-reach millennial population are able to make informed decisions about their health.”
McGuire discussed the importance of millennials knowing their healthcare options, and that it affects more than just their individual homes. She explained it is vital that young adults know, “how to advocate for quality care and expanded coverage in our state.”
The summit’s success was due in large part to the months of planning done by Cal State LA Assistant Professor, Dr. Portia Jackson and ChapCare’s Outreach, Enrollment, and Retention Supervisor, Bianca Gonzalez.
