Opening a restaurant with no experience and only a love of food under your belt can be quite a challenge. It’s not the cooking that most restaurateurs struggle with but everything that comes with the management and ownership side. This held true for Arin Navasartian, who opened U Pick Cafe with his brother on North Lake Avenue in Pasadena.

 

The brothers have always held one simple principle in regards to their restaurant and that’s what they credit their success to.

 

“We make food that we want to eat – it’s fresh, it’s tasty and pretty healthy,” said Navasartian.

 

Their menu includes a mix of Mediterranean dishes like chicken kabobs, traditional Persian stews and Greek wraps.

 

“Anyone from a baby to a 90-year-old can find something they like to eat here,” he said. Ground beef is a hit with younger children while salads are more popular with the adults, he added.

 

U Pick Cafe has an eclectic menu but the underlying theme is “fresh.” Their Greek wrap is a deliciously simple dish with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, flavorful feta cheese and fresh mint. It pairs well with a side of hummus.

 

Perhaps the best part of U Pick Cafe is that it gives you the freedom to curate your own meal.

 

”You can eat here everyday for a year and not have the same meal,” said Navasartian. His personal favorite is the beef with a side of rice and yogurt cucumbers.
