An elderly Pasadena man crossing a street at a stop sign was struck by an allegedly drunk driver, catapulted into traffic lanes and seriously injured before the driver was pursued by a Good Samaritan and captured by police on Christmas Eve.

The 89-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries to his chest and with scrapes and cuts, said Pasadena police Lt. Marcia Taglioretti.

The collision occurred about 9:49 p.m. at the intersection of Arlington Drive and South Orange Grove Boulevard. The suspect vehicle ran the stop sign before hitting the victim, Taglioretti said.

“There was a witness that saw the collision and that witness followed the suspect vehicle as it fled the area,” she said.

The witness directed police units to the suspect vehicle, and the suspect was stopped in the area of Arroyo Blvd. and La Loma Road.

Taglioretti said the suspect “showed signs of intoxication” and was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony hit and run.

She identified the driver as Spencer Stephens, 28, of Pasadena.

Stephens was booked into the Pasadena Jail at 2:19 a.m. Christmas day and is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
