Rep. Judy Chu (D) will join the Progressive Discussion Group for its Friday morning look at “The Intersection of Electoral Politics and Grassroots Organizing,” which, generic title notwithstanding, will consider the accomplishments of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
Rep. Chu will be joined by community organizer David Monkawa May 24 at a discussion to be moderated by Una Lee Jost, a member of the Progressive Asian Network for Action (PANA).
Chu is the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in the nation’s history. She represents the 27th Congressional District; a bailiwick that includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley.
Monkawa, for his part, is a member of PANA. His pedigree includes a successful fight, through his co-chairmanship of the National Coalition for Redress & Reparations, to get monetary redress for Japanese Americans forced into camps during World War II.
The event is being convened in honor of AAPIs Heritage Month. There will be a question and answer session with the headliners to round out the hour-long discussion.
The Progressive Discussion Group meets the first and third Friday of every month to consider the great questions of the day.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and is being held at Rose City Church, 1801 East Del Mar Avenue, Pasadena. For information call (310) 489-9951.
