City Begins Public Meetings on Capital Improvement Program

The Pasadena City Council’s Finance Committee will start public hearings Wednesday, April 19, on the City Manager’s recommended Capital Improvement Program budget for fiscal year 2018 through 2022.

The public hearing will be part of a Special Joint Meeting of the Finance Committee and the City Council starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers Room S249 at the Pasadena City Hall.

The public hearing is part of the process of adoption before a final recommendation is presented to the City Council. The Pasadena City Charter requires that the recommended CIP budget for the upcoming fiscal year be submitted to the City Council on or before the third Monday of May.

According to an Agenda Report prepared by the City’s Department of Public Works, the recommended CIP budget for fiscal year 2018 through 2022 contains 200 active projects with a total estimated cost of $953,073,973. Of these projects, 92 are scheduled for 2018 and will require appropriations amounting to $79,387,303.

In addition, the 2018 CIP budget contains a list of 74 “future projects” with an estimated cost of $297 million. Future projects aren’t covered by the current level of funding and will need new and additional investments since these are needed to properly maintain, repair and replace aging City infrastructure and address growing needs.

To adequately inform the community, copies of the recommended CIP budget have been placed in all public libraries in Pasadena and in the City Clerk’s office. The whole detailed CIP budget can also be accessed online through www.cityofpasadena.net/PublicWorks/Capital_Improvement_Program.

The Finance Committee is recommending that the public hearing on Wednesday be held from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m., and continued Monday next week, April 24, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. before the weekly City Council meeting.

Following the review by the joint City Council/Finance Committee, a final recommended CIP budget is scheduled to be presented to the City Council at next week’s regular meeting.
