Pasadena’s Design Commission will conduct a Final Design Review on Tuesday, March 14, on the construction of a new three-story, 95,487-square-foot student housing building on the Caltech campus.

Located at the northeast edge of campus, just west of Avery House and south of Del Mar Boulevard, the new building will be called the Bechtel Residence, after Caltech Life Trustee Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., and will provide undergraduate housing to 212 students, allowing all undergrads to live on campus and fully participate in residential life in the campus.

When a project undergoes Final Design Review, it means it has complied with the conditions of Concept Design Review and will be consistent with the policies of the Land Use Element under the Pasadena General Plan and Caltech’s Master Plan. The Final Design Review may still set some conditions that have to be reviewed and approved before the issuance of a building permit for the project.

Before the Design Commission meeting opens at 6 p.m., a special meeting will be conducted to visit and view projects sites at 2180 E. Foothill Blvd. and 635 E. Union Street, as part of Preliminary Consultation.

On the Foothill site, the City plans to build a new 23,935-square-foot two-story public maintenance and service facility and a three-level parking structure; on Union Street, a plan to build a new two-to-four story mixed use project with 3,265 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and 38 residential units has been submitted for approval; the project also involves the removal of three protected trees.

Also at the Design Commission meeting, a proposal to build new one-to-three story independent and assisted living buildings at Pasadena’s Las Encinas Hospital, located at 2900 E. Del Mar Blvd. will go through Concept Design Review.
