City Council Takes Up Olympics in the Rose Bowl, Mosquitoes, and Predevelopment Plan for the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center

The City Council tonight will take up a number of varied topics, including a do-over of considering the approval of hosting of up to seven Olympic soccer matches at the Rose Bowl in 2024.

Last week’s scheduled discussions and vote was tabled when two Councilmembers whose districts lie closest to the Rose Bowl could not attend the meeting.

If approved, the action would authorize Mayor Tornek to submit a letter to the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Exploratory Committee and the International Olympic Committee in order to express the City’s commitment to work with the city of Los Angeles in an effort to bring the Olympics to Southern California in 2024.

The Council is also expected to approve support for propositions 51, 54, 56, and 67, and to oppose propositions 57 and 65 for the November 2016 state election and support Measure M (Los Angeles County traffic improvement plan) and Measure A (safe, clean neighborhood parks and beaches measure).

From the Pasadena Health Department, the Council is expected to consider a recommendation to transfer responsibility of mosquito vector control to the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District due to, the Health Department says, a lack of resources and the Department’s inability to properly keep track of mosquito-borne diseases.

In an agenda report, the health department said it cannot provide the proper training, equipment or supplies to wipe out the necessary amount of adult mosquitoes needed to combat airborne diseases such as Zika and West Nile, nor can they keep track of their breeding patterns.

“It would be in the best interest of public health to actually engage with an organization that has the full scope and capacity to do a broader service,” Johnson said.

The Council will also hear the “predevelopment plan review” of the 2015-19 Rose Bowl Aquatic Center master plan.

The public portion of the Council meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall in Council Chambers, 100 N. Garfield Ave., Pasadena.
