City Declares Red Flag Fire Conditions, Concern Mounts

Published on Thursday, October 3, 2013 | 5:01 am

Pasadena Fire Chief Calvin Wells declared a Red Flag Alert throughout Pasadena effective Thursdaynight as the National Weather Service warns that extreme fire hazard conditions are developing in the San Gabriel Valley.

With the alert come parking restrictions which impose no parking rules on posted narrow and winding roads within Pasadena’s urban-wildland interface areas in order provide better Fire Department access to and resident evacuation from fire prone areas.

“The Pasadena Fire Dept. plans to add extra patrols throughout the city,” said Pasadena Fire Dept. spokesperson Lisa Derderian. “We’ll insure all personnel and apparatus are ready should the need exist locally or to assist in neighboring communities.”

Streets where parking is restricted on Red Flag days are posted with appropriate “No Parking” signs. A list of locations which are expected to be included is published below.

The Fire Dept. said the restrictions will be in effect until further notice.

Derderian reminds the public to be vigilant and not to use power tools that could produce sparks for landscaping.

“Don’t leave dog bowls outside that could produce excessive heat and radiate onto brush,” she said.

The National Weather Service said a fire weather watch is in effect and “critical fire weather conditions are expected as moderate Santa Ana winds combine with very low relative humidity.”

The weather bureau added that Santa Anita winds are expected to peak Friday midday and will persist, but will weaken from Friday afternoon through Saturday. Temperature will range from 5 to 10 degrees above normal.

A very low relative humidity is also expected for Los Angeles County. By Friday morning, relatively humidity is expected to fall sharply into the mid teens and will drop to a single digit by Saturday.

The wind is expected to move 20 to 30 mph northeast with gusts up to 50 mph in the favored ridges and canyons and 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph elsewhere.

The weather bureau warned that “if fire ignition occurs, there could be rapid spread of wildlife that would lead to a threat of life and property.”
