City: Second Pasadena Police Officer is Under Federal Investigation

Three days after a Pasadena police lieutenant was arrested and charged with federal gun crimes, the City of Pasadena announced that a second police officer is under federal investigation.

“We can confirm that another Police Officer is on paid Administrative Leave and under investigation by federal authorities,” Interim City Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian said Monday afternoon. “Because it is a personnel matter we cannot comment further.”

Last Friday, Pasadena police Lt. Vasken Gourdikian pleaded not guilty at a Friday arraignment in Los Angeles on federal charges of selling guns without a federal firearms license, making false statements on Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives forms, and possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle.

Earlier Monday, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesperson Ginger Colbrun said that last year the ATF’s Los Angeles Field Division discovered some California law enforcement officers who did not have a Federal Firearms License were purchasing “off roster” firearms and reselling those firearms to non-law enforcement entities for a profit.

Colbrun said she could not provide specifics on any of those individuals or the agencies to which they belong because these are ongoing investigations.

The City’s announcement Monday came minutes after the conclusion of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting, at which police matters are reviewed. There was no mention of the investigation into the second officer made during the Committee meeting.

The identity of the second officer is not yet known, or the nature of the federal investigation against the officer.
