There is no mistaking the level of difficulty of the early season schedule for the Pasadena City College men’s basketball team. The unranked Lancers opened the San Bernardino Valley Alvin Hunter Classic on November 14 with a matchup against the region’s No. 3-rated Saddleback Gauchos. PCC had faced No. 1 Antelope Valley in its previous tournament at Ventura, losing to the Marauders by 22 points.

PCC played Saddleback tough, but lost a 78-72 decision. The Lancers then were eliminated from reaching the third day finals in a 1-point loss to College of the Desert, 85-84, on November 15.

The Lancers are 1-4 to open the ’13-14 season. Saddleback was able to avenge PCC’s upset playoff win over the Gauchos in the opening round of last season’s SoCal Playoffs.

PCC took a 38-37 lead on a 3-point basket by Keith Langston four minutes into the second half. Later an Andrew Harper jumper tied it at 55-55 with 7:33 left. Saddleback pulled away with an 8-2 run and the Gauchos made 12 free throws over the final three minutes to seal their win.

Langston, a freshman guard, scored 20 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field. Freshman forward Jaryn Taylor came off the bench to tally 19 points along with six rebounds. Frosh point guard Justin Fletcher added 12 points and seven assists. PCC shot well from the free throw line, making 18 of 25 attempts (72 percent), but Saddleback countered by totaling 35 makes in 48 line shots (72.9).

Against Desert, the Lancers led by nine points midway through the first half, fell behind 49-40 by halftime, and would trail by as much as 12 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game. With 19 seconds left, PCC took an 84-83 lead on a Harper free throw. But COD (4-3 record) would net the winning basket on Jordan Pellum’s layup with 12 seconds to go.

Sophomore starting guard Jonathan Henderson poured in 27 points, including three 3-pointers, and seven assists as he led four Lancers to score in double figures. Langston aded 15 points (7-for-11 shooting) and nine rebounds while Taylor had 14 points, nine boards and four assists. Fletcher contributed 10 points, five assists and three steals.

The Lancers play their home opener on Friday, Nov. 21 when they host No. 4 San Bernardino Valley (4-1) in a 6 p.m. game at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
