Coin Collecting 101

Published on Friday, February 12, 2016 | 11:23 am

It’s easy to start a coin collection and watch your knowledge grow as you discover this new hobby.

You can begin with coins that you already have on hand. Check your pockets, wallet, desk drawers and under the sofa cushions. Most people are surprised to discover the variety of coins hiding in their home’s forgotten nooks. Then, ask friends and relatives if they have any old or unusual coins to contribute.

Read and learn how to look at the coins, don’t just look at the prices, read about the history of the coins and the types. Learn some basics first – types of coins, dates and mintmarks, think about how coins are made. Be open, don’t make quick decisions about what to collect, just go out and explore!

It is important to be realistic about how much you can really afford to spend on coins so buying used coins is a great way to maximize your collection. Keep in mind that aside from the coins you may want to purchase one or more coin albums to organize and display your collection.
