A German Shepherd dog was rescued from inside a sweltering hot car with closed windows after the dog’s owner was arrested for assaulting an off-duty federal agent inside a Pasadena Vons Market, authorities said.

The weekend incident began around 3:50 p.m. Saturday when a man inside the Vons located in the 2300 block of East Colorado Boulevard near Sierra Madre Boulevard became disruptive, Pasadena Police Lt. William Grisafe said.

The man’s behavior became so extreme that an off-duty federal agent intervened, but was attacked by the man and a physical fight between the pair ensued, Grisafe said.

The man was subdued and arriving Pasadena police took the suspect into custody for battery.

A search for the man’s car by police and Von’s employees resulted in discovery that the suspect’s dog had been locked inside the car “for an extended period,” Grisafe said.

Police rescued the dog and gave it water.

The Pasadena Humane Society was called to the scene and took the dog for examination. There is no word currently on the dog’s condition.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released by police.
