Congresswoman Judy Chu, Civic Leaders Announce Endorsements for Hoyt Hillsman for Pasadena City College Board of Trustees

Congresswoman Judy Chu, along with a number of civic and community leaders, has endorsed Pasadena author, educator and current Vice-President of the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees Hoyt Hilsman in his campaign for re-election.

Hilsman, who is a 25-year resident of Pasadena and a former instructor at PCC and UCLA, has been a trustee of the college since 2015.

“Since I joined the Board, we have made tremendous progress at PCC,” Hilsman said in a prepared statement. “Not only did we restore the college’s full accreditation status after a period of turmoil, but PCC was named one of the top ten community colleges in the nation by the prestigious Aspen Institute for the past two years in a row. I am gratified to have the support of so many civic and community leaders for my work on behalf of PCC and its diverse body of 28,000 students.”

In addition to the endorsement from Congresswoman Judy Chu, Hilsman has been endorsed by Assemblymember Chris Holden, Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, Pasadena Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton, Pasadena City Council Members Gene Masuda, Victor Gordo and John Kennedy, Temple City Mayor pro Temp Tom Chavez, Temple City Councilmember William Man, LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, former Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, former PCC President and State Senator Jack Scott and former State Senator Carol Liu.

Leaders of the PCC community, including PCC Board Members Anthony Fellow, Berlinda Brown and James Osterling, former PCC President Rajen Vurdien, PCC Foundation President Bill Hawkins, PCC Dean of Educational Services (retired) William Goldmann and Alan Lamson, former President of the PCC Academic Senate have endorsed Hilsman. He has also been endorsed by many community activists, including ACT Executive Director and United Democratic HQ Steering Committee Member Jon Fuhrman, Andrea Blum Mark of What Democracy Looks Like, Anne Wolf, past Chair of Pasadena’s Commission on the Status of Women and longtime civil rights activist and United Democratic HQ Steering Committee Member Dolores Hickambottom, among others.

Hilsman, who holds a B.A. from Columbia University and a J.D. from Columbia Law School, has served on numerous local boards and commissions, including the Community Development Committee, the Northwest Commission, and as chair of the Pasadena Community Access Corporation. He also has been an instructor at PCC and at UCLA. His wife Nancy worked as a teacher at Loyola High School and Glendale College.
