Council Approves Beyoncé and Jay-Z Concert

The Pasadena City Council today unanimously approved a license agreement with concert promoters Live Nation to present Beyoncé and Jay-Z in a performance at the Rose Bowl stadium August 2. The concert comes to town just days before the Rhianna/Eminem Monster Tour arrives in Pasadena August 7.

There was virtually no community opposition at the meeting, though at least one community member, Tom Siefert, jokingly asked on behalf of his nephew, that the concerts “turn the volume up,” since he wants to listen to the shows.

“We have a tremendous opportunity here,” said Rose Bowl General Manager Daryl Dunn, of the increasing number of concerts at the Rose Bowl. “Our non-football events will generate $5.2 million this year, and we need to be on our ‘A’ game.”

“The increase in technology and the ease by which artists can make tickets available online has only increased the number of these large shows,” he added.

There have been only six concerts at the Rose Bowl since the start of 2013.

The Beyoncé/Jay Z tour would ostensibly be the final approved “displacement event” of the year, as the Council has only approved 18 games, concerts, or events for 2014. (A proposed UCLA post-season appearance would be dependent on the team’s season, leaving the possibly of an open event date.)

However, Councilmember John J. Kennedy introduced the idea of leaving the final number of events open.

“Certainly the idea of more concerts is more promising and digestible to the community than the NFL,” said Councilmember Steve Madison.

While there was only one security complaint at last year’s Justin Timberlake/JayZ show, Dunn pointed out that the new presence of Uber and Lyft, the popular mobile apps for rides, has created a new type of traffic problem that will need to be addressed, as driver circled the stadium with no official drop-off spot.

Vice-Mayor Jacquie Robinson also pointed out the need to be attentive to the local community, and to pay special attention to Lincoln Avenue above the Arroyo Seco, which was severely clogged during the Timberlake/JayZ show.

Dunn assured the Council that the Rose Bowl Operating Company would add additional event management staff for the upcoming concert, and would stage a “pre-event” at the Rose Bowl grounds in hopes that patrons would arrive early.
No ticket sale date has been formally announced for the upcoming show.
