Council Asks: How Will Federal Shutdown Affect Pasadena?

[Updated Oct. 1, 2013 | 7:55 a.m.]  The Pasadena City Council was in session Monday night when the U.S. Congress gridlocked in its budget debate, sending the federal government into a partial shutdown for the first time in nearly two decades.

Councilmember Steve Madison recognized the shutdown may impact Pasadena and asked City Manager Michael Beck to address the issue before the meeting ended.

The Department of Justice has funding through the end of the week so they should have no delay, Beck said.

The federal Women, Infant and Children WIC program was the only program in Pasadena that could be potentially affected by the shutdown, Beck noted. However, after the meeting Beck confirmed that WIC had enough funding through October.

“Well it’s pretty appalling that things would get to this with something that has already been determined,” Madison said.

Despite the partial shutdown, enrollments for health coverage under the new health care laws will continue on Tuesday as planned.

“Yes we will start sign ups and we are going to continue to push forward,” Pasadena’s Public Health Director Dr. Eric Walsh wrote in an email Monday.

Early today, City of Pasadena Public Information Officer William Boyer said the city currently has “no direct impacts.”

“We are watching and waiting and hoping our federal leaders will resolve the situation quickly,” Boyer said.
