Pasadena City Councilmember Steve Madison pulled election papers Tuesday, formally kicking off his campaign for re-election as the representative for Council District 6 (West Pasadena, San Rafael, Linda Vista).

“Pasadena faces challenges that require experience, leadership and commitment on the City Council,” said Madison.  “Over the last few months, I’ve spoken to many people in District 6 about whether I am still the right person to take on those issues.  I have been humbled by the overwhelming positive response.”

In a letter to supporters, Madison listed some key accomplishments during his time on the Council, including:

·        Killing the 710 freeway extension once and for all;

·        Reacquiring Desiderio from the federal government and creating a neighborhood park and affordable homes there;

·        Persuading PUSD to reverse course and keep San Rafael School open;

·        Rebuilding La Loma Bridge and renaming it in John Van de Kamp’s memory.

·        Keeping Pasadena financially secure after the Great Recession while protecting vital services – and rebuilding a healthy “rainy day” reserve.

·        Helping pass Measures I&J to provide $7 million or more in annual support to PUSD to help ensure all Pasadena’s children can meet their full potential.

“I’m proud of that record,” said Madison, “but I’m even more excited about the challenges that lie ahead: reacquiring the 710 “stump” so we can imagine its reuse; making sure the millions we provide PUSD are well-invested; opposing senseless over-development; reducing traffic and congestion; securing the Rose Bowl’s finances; doing our part to reduce homelessness and ease high housing costs – and generally maintaining the high quality of life we expect from our tolerant, progressive, safe, thriving world-class city.”

A former Assistant U.S. Attorney (federal criminal prosecutor) in Los Angeles, Madison is a partner in the global litigation law firm Quinn, Emanuel, Urquhart & Sullivan LLP.  In addition to his JD degree he holds a Master of Public Administration from USC.
