Machinery To Hoist New, Powerful $3 Million MRI Scanning Machine Into Research Lab Monday

Heavy machinery will hoist a new and very powerful $3 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging device and delicately manuever it through a hole torn in the Huntington Medical Research Institute’s Magnetic Resonance lab at 10 Pico Street on Monday morning.

HMRI a leading nonprofit biomedical research organization based in Pasadena. The General Electric 3 Tesla MRI being installed today is double the strength of HMRI’s previous magnet and is specifically designed and calibrated to capture the wide array of images necessary at the lab – not just anatomical images as are typically done in a normal MRI.

HMRI will use the new equipment to study – Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries, liver cancer, heart failure, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and other conditions currently being researched at the institutes.

Explaining the significance of the new scanner, HMRI said it will be vastly different from standard MRI systems that produce images of tissue using the proton signal that comes from abundant water in the human body.

With the new system, HMRI will use specialized equipment and a technique called magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and tune in other elements such as carbon and phosphorus. Tuning in these other elements will allow HMRI researchers to obtain chemical information and give them insight into metabolism and pathologies that can’t be seen in simple anatomical images.

Huntington Medical Research Institutes is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit, public-benefit organization. For six decades, it has been making biomedical discoveries and developments that have set new precedents in medical knowledge across the United States and around the world.
