Depleted Women’s Soccer Helps Ulmer Earn PCC Career Shutout Record

Pasadena City College women's soccer team sophomore goalie Angelique Ulmer became the Lancers' all-time leader in shutouts Friday as she made four saves to backstop PCC's 2-0 blanking of El Camino College-Compton Center at Robinson Stadium. Ulmer recorded her 12th career shutout, breaking the two-year school record set by Andrea Otero in 1998-1999.

The team's five wins this season have two common components–all were played at PCC and all were shutout victories by the Lancers (5-7-3 overall, 3-4-1 in the SCC). While Ulmer (South Pasadena High) didn't have much action, she preserved the shutout on a leaping tipaway of a high shot by Compton's Anais Quezada with 11 minutes left.

After a sluggish first half offensively, PCC peppered Compton for 15 shots in the second half. In the 52nd minute, sophomore defender Karina Costilla raced down the left side and fired in a low-rolling shot for a 1-0 Lancers' lead. In the 72nd minute, sophomore forward Christine Salas sent a corner kick into the box and forward Elena Heuze scored an important insurance goal.

Heuze, who went to high school in the Philippines, was especially aggressive and often made steals or controlled the ball in Compton territory. The freshman led the team in shots with five attempts.

PCC head coach Reggie Rivas talked about the team's recent rash of injuries that spelled absences this game by two top defenders in Bailey Shaw-Rodriguez and Michelle Morales as well as top playmaker Rachel Schroeder.

"We have to make good with what we have, and that was a pretty strong effort by us," Rivas said. "We are happy as a team to help Ulmer reach the shutout record. The other thing we are proud of is that we continue to play our best soccer at our home field. We have to try to find that confidence on the road."

PCC is a sparkling 5-1-1 at Robinson Stadium this season, but 0-6-2 in away games. The team's depleted roster now has just four players who have played in all 15 games–Costilla, Salas, frosh forward Ani Hemelians, and first-year midfielder Talin Kojababian.

The Lancers will be tested at home Tuesday, Oct. 28 when they play against Mt. San Antonio College. Game time is 3 p.m.
