Up until a week ago, the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team figured its postseason hopes were gone. But after learning that the state had approved two additional seeds to create a Southern California Regional play-in round for the No. 15-18 spots, the Lancers may sneak into the field.

On Wednesday night in the team’s South Coast Conference and home finale, PCC could not hang on to late leads in both the opening two sets and lost to second-place Mt. San Antonio, 25-23, 30-28, 25-14. The team honored its nine sophomores in a pre-game ceremony.

The unranked Lancers finish the regular season at 14-8 and 9-5 to tie for third place in the SCC with Cerritos. PCC’s strength of schedule includes a victory over state No. 2-ranked Santa Barbara City College, a 5-set loss to No. 19 San Diego Mesa, a 4-set defeat v. No. 22 Bakersfield and a 5-set loss v. No. 25 Ventura. They also have a pair of losses to No. 6 and SCC champion El Camino (one in four sets, the other in three).

Against Mt. SAC, the Lancers rallied from 10-3 down to take a 23-22 lead before losing. In the second set, led 14-7, 20-14, and 23-18, but the Mounties fought back and tied it 24-24. In the extra points, Erica Gumz pounded kills on each of the final four Mt. SAC points including the final two that sealed the 30-28 marathon set win. There were nine ties in the first set and 11 times the teams tied it each other in the second set.

The Lancers struggled in the third set as Mt. SAC (17-5, 12-2) closed out the sweep. Gumz scored a match-high 19 kills. For Pasadena, Kirsten Cabarong scored eight kills while Kendra Logan made seven kills and four blocks. Samantha Flores added 17 digs and two aces.

“We played hard and it was great volleyball the first two sets,” said PCC head coach Kari Post. “The second set took everything out of us, and we just couldn’t recover from that loss. I’m proud of the team. We hung in against a very good Mt. SAC team. Now we will find out if the season continues or not on Friday.”

This Friday, Nov. 20, the regional seeding meeting will take place at El Camino College. Check the Lancers athletics twitter at @PCCAthletics for an update on the team’s postseason status.
