District 6 Councilmember Steve Madison is holding a town hall meeting set for Tuesday evening that will focus on addressing public safety issues and presenting police and fire department statistics about his district.

Scheduled participants indicated expected topics will include burglaries, homelessness and traffic.

The bulk of the meeting will provide the public with an extensive Q&A qopportunity and will feature presentations by Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez, Pasadena Fire Department Chief Bertral Washington, and Pasadena Police Lieutenants. Peter Hettema, Mark Goodman and Diego Torres.

“We’re going to look at crime trends in that particular area. The hot-buttons of conversation are usually of residential and vehicle burglaries,” said Lt. Hettema who is the area commander of service Area 1 which covers most of District 6.

According to Madison’s office, statistics show that burglaries are down in District 6.

“We are going to deal with residential burglaries, what crime trends are and what the stats say and pull together what I hope [residents] will do,” said Hettema.

Lt. Mark Goodman will present issues related to homelessness and programs that the Pasadena Police Department has to assist with ending homelessness and providing services to people who may be in need.

“I plan on talking about our enhanced HOPE team, which is the Homeless Outreach Psychological Evaluation team. We recently added a clinician to the team from the L.A. County Department of Mental Health and we recently added an officer,” said Goodman.

The HOPE team now has a total of three police officers and three full time clinicians who work to reach out to homeless individuals and deal with quality of life issues that are related to homelessness.

“We’re in the infancy stages of initiating a program by which the City, though the Health Department and in collaboration with the Police Department, is going to try to identify and then implement case management with folks who we encounter on a regular basis,” explained Goodman.

The solution to homelessness is permanent supportive housing which is City-wide team effort that requires help beyond the PPD, according to Goodman.

“The police department wants to do its part to assist in making that happen for people who are willing to engage in our services,” said Goodman.

Councilmember Madison’s Town Hall Meeting “Public Safety: Resources, Responses and Results” is scheduled for Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Southern California Public Radio Crawford Family Forum located at 474 S. Raymond Ave.
