Dozens of PCC Students, Teachers Protest “Climate of Fear”

No arrests or injuries were reported from a Thursday afternoon demonstration at Pasadena City College where dozens of students as well as teachers protested over claims that school officials have not done enough to ensure classes are available for all students.

In fact, Melissa Michelson, an Assistant Professor of Languages at the college, said board members and administrators have created a “climate of fear and distrust” on campus by imposing cuts and other changes over the objections of teachers and students.

Also, Kris Pilon, a professor in the school’s screenwriting program, said the elimination of the college’s winter intersession, which would have started this week, has decreased student access to classes and disrupted potential spring university transfers.

Pasadena City College spokesperson Juan Gutierrez countered their claims, saying that more 70 more classes are being offered in the spring term in comparison to last year, adding that college will also add “late start” classes to accommodate transfer needs.

Gutierrez also said the $6.7 million funding from Proposition 30 will allow the college to offer four times as many summer classes as last year.
