Pasadena City College Athletics announced that Dr. Michael McClellan will now lead the area’s intercollegiate sports eligibility office as an associate athletic director in charge of compliance. McClellan will work in concert with PCC Athletic Director Tony Barbone.

Dr. McClellan continues his role as director of the college’s successful Stan Gray Academic Athletic Zone, a study location designed for student-athletes to help track academic progress through tutoring and independent study. McClellan is a full-time counselor and an associate professor.

In his additional role in processing eligibility of all student-athletes for PCC’s 16 intercollegiate sports teams, McClellan and selected members of his Zone staff will be housed in Athletics in GM 201T.

“Prior to my arrival at PCC in January, there were unfortunately several personnel changes in who handled team eligibility,” Barbone said. “This caused various issues that proved detrimental to our head coaches and our student-athletes. Dr. McClellan’s exemplary work in the Academic Zone made him an ideal choice to direct our eligibility office beginning with the 2014-15 athletic sports season. His familiarity with the rules of the CCCAA and student-athlete requirements along with his passion for aiding students will help the eligibility process be smoother and more effective.”

Dr. McClellan earned his Ed.D at Cal State University, Long Beach after accomplishing three master’s degrees from the University of Redlands, University of La Verne as well as Azusa Pacific University. In 2009, McClellan was honored by California’s athletic counselors/advisors association (3C4A) as the State Counselor of the Year. He’s worked at PCC since 2001.

Once a student-athlete himself, Dr. McClellan played football at the University of Oregon (1986-90) where he also earned two bachelor’s degrees. For the Ducks, the wide receiver/kick returner still is No. 2 on the college’s list for career highest kick return average.

The PCC Athletics eligibility office number is 626-585-7218. Dr. McClellan can also be reached via e-mail at mlmcclellan@pasadena.edu.
