Facts to Know Before the BCS National Championship Game

Published on Monday, January 6, 2014 | 5:10 am

Monday, January 6 marks the fourth time that the Rose Bowl will host the annual Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship, with this season’s top two contending teams, the No. 1 Florida State and the No. 2 Auburn Tigers.

The last time a national champion was crowned at the Rose Bowl Stadium was on January 7, 2010, when Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21.

The 2014 championship game will be the last time that the BCS will hold the current single-game championship format. The format will be replaced with a four-team system, the College Football Playoff (CFP), beginning next season.

The nineteenth meeting for the two teams, Florida State (13-0, 8-0 ACC) will battle it out with the Auburn Tigers (13-0, 8-0 SEC) at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6.

It had been a good year for Florida State as it blasted teams in the 2013 season by huge margins including the most recent fight with Duke (45-7), Idaho (80-14), Wake Forest (59-3), as well as the October match against Maryland (63-0).

The Auburn Tigers have fought much closer battles with opponents such as Mississippi St. (24-20), Texas A&M (45-41) and Georgia (43-38).

The team’s 2013 season has also been a big single-season turnaround as they won their eighth SEC title and third championship game a year after their worst season in 60 years.

Tonight’s game starts at 5:30 p.m.
