Hector LaFarga Jr., executive director of Pasadena-based Families Forward Learning Center for eight years, will be leaving the nonprofit this month, the organization said in an announcement Wednesday.

Families Forward Learning Center provides free education and social services to low-income families in Pasadena and Altadena with children up to five years old. Its Family Learning Center is on a 10,000-square-foot building on North Fair Oaks Avenue in the heart of Northwest Pasadena.

A team of education, planning, and design professionals has transformed the building into a facility that could support and promote learning for thousands of families over several decades.

“Under Hector’s leadership, Families Forward expanded our impact through new programs, successfully completed a rebranding process, and positioned our organization as a resource center in the community and a programmatic model regionally,” the announcement said. “Through it all, Hector has ensured that the families we serve remain at the center of our work, stewarding the culture of community, compassion, and empowerment that makes Families Forward so special.”

Before coming to Families Forward in 2011, LaFarga previously served as Vice President of Mentoring Programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles and spent 14 years at INROADS, a national nonprofit placing talented minority youth in corporate and community internships.

In addition to serving as Executive Director at Families Forward, La Farga is a Commissioner with the Pasadena Human Services Commission and sits on the boards of Latino Heritage and the Pasadena Latino Coalition. He is the father of four school-aged children.

The announcement said Elva Sandoval has been selected to serve as Interim Executive Director, as a search for the next permanent Executive Director begins.

The announcement added La Farga will be serving as Regional Executive Director at After-School All-Stars, a comprehensive after-school program serving with the greatest needs and fewest resources kids throughout Los Angeles County and the Lucerne Valley.
