First Low-Stress Roseway Bicycle Route in Action

The City of Pasadena’s Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works has completed installation of the first Roseways sign on Howard Street, east of Arroyo Blvd. in Northwest Pasadena, marking the first of a network of low-speed, low-traffic-volume neighborhood streets where people of all ages and abilities can bicycle comfortably and use other forms of transportation.

The Roseways network incorporates pavement markings and wayfinding signage to allow bicyclists to easily navigate along bicycle-friendly routes, connect with other bikeways, and arrive comfortably at their destinations.

These bikeways connect the rider with such interesting destinations as local parks in Pasadena, museums, business districts, schools and transportation hubs or terminals, including Metro’s Gold Line stations.

Fred Dock, Pasadena Transportation Director, said the installation of Roseways signages will continue until all of the planned network signage is installed. Howard Street is the first corridor completed.

The Roseway program was discussed at several community meetings over the past several months and a lot of community input was considered in its inception.

Some of the proposed Roseways are designated as Class III bikeways, which provides for shared use with pedestrian or motor vehicle traffic. Others which have no existing bike designations will be using bike boulevard or neighborhood greenway features which maintain low-speed traffic for motor vehicles and are optimized for bicycle traffic.
