Five new members—Bill Bogaard, Charles Fairchild, Betty Huang, Susan Murakami (BS ’75), and James Zhu (MS ’91, PhD ’94)—have been elected to the Caltech Associates Board.

Bill Bogaard is the former mayor of Pasadena. His time in office was an active period in the city’s history, involving significant new business development; the arrival of the Gold Line light rail transit system; new housing construction; strengthening of cultural institutions such as the Pacific Asia Museum, the Pasadena Playhouse, Pasadena POPS, and ArtCenter College of Design; reform of the public schools; and enhancement of the city’s neighborhoods. Bogaard engaged in private law practice, handling financial transactions and mergers and acquisitions, and thereafter served as executive vice president and general counsel of First Interstate Bancorp, a financial services holding company.

He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. After serving as a U.S. Air Force captain in Los Angeles and Casablanca, Morocco, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School. Bogaard is a longtime Associates member, sharing that “membership in the Associates provides ready access to the knowledge, the personalities, and the excitement of Caltech.”

Charles (Chip) Fairchild is the general counsel of a diversified agriculture company, serving as head of the company’s legal affairs, advising on natural resources, land use, litigation, business planning, and employee matters. Fairchild also manages several real estate companies. He previously worked in private practice as a litigator of trust, business, and civil matters and as an estate planning attorney. Fairchild holds a BA from Occidental College, a Master of Laws degree in taxation from Loyola Law School, and a JD from Southwestern. He is a trustee of Southwestern Law School and a fellow of The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.

Betty Huang is devoted to raising awareness and funds for arts and educational institutions and serves as secretary of the Huang Family Foundation. She previously worked in private banking in Hong Kong and the United States with Bank of America and Citigroup. She was born in Taiwan and grew up in Hong Kong. She holds a BA in business administration from USC.

Huang is a vice chair of the Segerstrom Center’s board of directors, and she serves on the board of Angels of the Arts—the women’s group that supports the center—as well as Women & Philanthropy at UCLA. She is an emeritus board member of the South Coast Repertory, and involved with the Pacific Symphony and the Philharmonic Society. She also served as the co-chair of the Chinese Cultural Association Committee of the Bowers Museum.

Susan Murakami is a staff pathologist at Huntington Memorial Hospital. She holds a BS from Caltech, having matriculated the second year the Institute admitted women. Murakami received her MD from the University of Michigan, completed her residency at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, and did fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. She is past president of the Caltech Gnome Club, has been a past chair of the Caltech Y board, serves on the Caltech SURF board, and has served as a Seminar Day chair for the Caltech Alumni Association. In her spare time, she enjoys helping Tom Mannion, Senior Director of Student Activities and Programs, with his student cooking classes and assisting at his special events, such as food and wine pairing courses, manners courses, and 12-to 21-course tasting menu dinners.

James Zhu, a Caltech alumn, is a partner at JunHe LLP, a Chinese law firm having over 700 attorneys and leads the firm’s intellectual property (IP) practice. Zhu represents U.S. clients to obtain and enforce their patent rights in China by leading IP litigation, procuring patent rights, and offering strategic IP counselling for their business in PRC. Prior to JunHe, Zhu was a partner in Perkins Coie’s Los Angeles Office and the Managing Partner of its Beijing Office. In the late 90s, he was a co-founder & General Counsel of GanTech International, a Silicon Valley venture-backed start-up. BusinessWeek elected Zhu as one of most influential “sea turtles” (U.S. returnees) in the Sino-American community.
