Football: La Salle Storms Back in Desert, Wins in Scottsdale, Arizona, in Three Overtimes, 28-25

The heat from the sun wasn’t as bad as La Salle and its football team thought it might be at kickoff.

But Notre Dame Prep of Scottsdale, Arizona, provided plenty of it and an 18-0 halftime lead.

The Saints (3-2) then took a 25-0 lead and it looked all but over for the Lancers.

La Salle, though, showed the heart of a champion, and came all the way back to earn a 28-25 victory in triple overtime.

Johnny Clarizio’s 28-yard field goal gave La Salle (4-1) a 28-25 lead after two overtimes of no scoring, and Notre Dame Prep drove all the way to the Lancers’ 2 yard line on a fourth-and-goal play.

The Saints decided not to risk a 19-yard field goal attempt and went for the win, but the stout La Salle defense held its ground and pulled off the remarkable and emotional comeback.

Amon Milliner continues his all-world performances, with 242 yards rushing on 28 carries. Milliner scored on runs of 45 and 62 yards.

Jake Caan played remarkably well, completing 26 of 32 passes for 247 yards, and included an 18-yard TD pass to star receiver Harrison MacDonald.

“We came out and played sloppy in the first half and had a couple personal fouls,” La Salle coach Russell Gordon said. “We went into halftime and said ‘I don’t want to win the second half with anything but character.’ And we did that and won the game.”

Jake Rose and Myles Cecil were beasts on defense.

Rose had 16 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Cecil made 12 tackles and had two sacks.

“I think we started off pretty strong, but got down,” Rose said. “We really came together as a defense in the second half and played assignment football like our coaches teach us. We really just gave everything we had every single play and the result showed that.”

Free safety Wyatt Cimino picked off a Notre Dame Prep pass to seal the game in the third overtime.

Gordon’s voice was cracking on the phone from Scottsdale, but his pride shined through.

“We came from behind, played clean and with character,” Gordon said. “This team (Notre Dame Prep) gave us the challenge we’ll need to compete in a very good league that we’re in. They also gave us some amazing hospitality and we’re very thankful for that.”

As much as Milliner has been ‘the guy,” Caan had a breakout game, which included a 13-for-13 stretch without an incompletion.

“Jake Caan played extremely well, poised and efficient,” Gordon said. “He managed the game well and we relied on his arm, Amon’s legs and great blocking.”
