For the First Time in 16 Years, Pasadena Will Get a Different New Mayor Tonight

For the first time in 16 years, Pasadena will elect a new mayor whose name is not Bill Bogaard as the municipal run-off election today pits Councilmember Terry Tornek against Vice Mayor Jacque Robinson.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Eligible voters will pick the new Mayor and a City Council District 1 representative.

Robinson, who serves in the largely ceremonial role of Vice Mayor, has won recent endorsements from Pasadena City College Board Trustee Bill Thomson and Pasadena Police Officers Association, the Pasadena Firefighters Association, the Los Angeles Democratic Party, United Teachers of Pasadena, state Sen. Carol Liu, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, the National Women’s Political Caucus of Greater Pasadena and District 6 City Councilman Steve Madison.

Councilmember Tornek is a former Planning Director for the city who in addition to sitting on the City Council has also served Pasadena as a member of the Design Commission, Planning Commission, Finance Committee, Municipal Services Committee, Fire and Police Retirement Board and Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

For the District 1 Council seat, Pasadena Unified School Board member Tyron Hampton goes up against former Pasadena Fire Chief Calvin Wells.

In the District 1 race, Tyron Hampton is a School Board member who comes grew up locally, is a product of local public schools, and joined and works at his family’s business, Pasadena Construction. Hampton’s supporters, according to campaign documents, include Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and William Chu, CFO of Singpoli, a Pasadena real estate investment and construction firm which owns the dusitD2 Constance Pasadena.

Facing Hampton is Calvin Wells, the only candidate in any city race to have been endorsed by outgoing Mayor Bill Bogaard. Wells is also backed by Council members Robinson, the council’s current District 1 representative, John Kennedy, Victor Gordo, Steve Madison and Gene Masuda, the Pasadena Police Officers Association, the Pasadena Fire Management Association, United Teachers of Pasadena and the Democrats of Pasadena Foothills.

The polls will be open between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.  Click here is a full list of polling places.

Ballot results will be announced by City Clerk Mark Jomsky as soon as possible after the polls close at 8 p.m.

Live broadcast coverage of Election Night direct from the Council Chamber will be provided by Pasadena Media, www.pasadenamedia.tv . The live coverage will be broadcast on KPAS, Pasadena’s government cable access station, on Ch. 3 for Charter subscribers and Ch. 99 for AT&T U-verse subscribers.
