A former Fire Chief who served six years with the Pasadena Fire Department is being commemorated as an honorary member of the Metro Chiefs by the Metropolitan Fire Protection Association.

Ernest Mitchell Jr., who served the City of Pasadena from 1998 to 2004, is the third person to have received this honor in the Metro’s 51-year history, according to a statement released to the media.

Mitchell was named an honorary Metro Chief for his exceptional leadership capabilities in the areas of fire prevention, fire suppression and other related disciplines by the Metropolitan Fire Protection Association in tandem with the National Fire Protection Association, according to the Metro Executive Board.

Mitchell, who currently holds the prestigious position as the United States Fire Administrator of the Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA), retired as the Fire Chief and Assistant Director of Disaster Emergency Services for the Pasadena Fire Department after 33 years of fire service, according to the statement.

Prior to joining Pasadena, Mitchell served as a Battalion Chief for the City of Compton and seven years as Fire Chief for the City of Monrovia.

Mitchell was selected for this award by Metro President Rhoda Mae Kerr, Fire Chief of the Austin Fire Department in Texas in a recent board meeting in San Antonio.
