Samantha Williams of Samantha Williams Interior Designs has been tasked with designing the kitchen, dining room, and prep kitchen at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design.
This year’s showcase takes place on the lush grounds of the Descanso Gardens in the Boddy House, a 22-room Hollywood Regency style mansion built in 1937.
For homeowners anticipating a kitchen redesign in their future, Williams shared some tips to make the process a little easier and the outcome a lot better.
Start with the Appliances
If you’re bold enough to design your own kitchen, selecting the kitchen appliances is a good place to start. Once you know how much space the dishwasher and ice machine and other large appliances will take up, it’s easier to build around them.
“What you plan to put in the kitchen is the first step,” says Williams.
Choose Materials that Last
The modern family kitchen is one of the higher-use rooms in a family’s household, if not the highest. It’s the heart of the house and defacto meet-up point for many families.
Williams chose durable and sleek materials that will stand the test of time: engineered quartz on the countertops, tile floors in a herringbone pattern, and high-end appliances that will last for years.
Designing a kitchen is an expensive endeavor. You don’t want to have to redo it. Build a strong kitchen.
Take Cues from Your Environment
The Boddy House is surrounded by 150 acres of botanical gardens. The second floor of the house has sweeping views of the San Gabriel mountains.
The kitchen created by Williams is spacious, uncluttered, and the large windows brighten the creamy color palette with a shiny glow. Samantha’s kitchen doesn’t distract from the surrounding environment, but rather enhances it.
The Pasadena Showcase House of Design takes through May 19th. Visit pasadenashowcase.org for more information and tickets.
