Gallery Opening: Visual Hunter Documents Walls as Witnesses

The Curatorial Assistance Gallery in Old Pasadena has opened “The Art of the City Wall: Mixed Message,” featuring the work of photographer and longtime local resident, Bill Wishner, which uses photography as a means to illustrate the aesthetics of the urban wall. The opening reception was held on January 28, 2015.

Wishner calls himself a “visual hunter” because his art is in his framing. As a photographer, He exhibits creative control through framing and refrains from using Photoshop or otherwise altering his images.

Wishner’s exhibition “Mixed Message” documents walls covered in street art from cities around the world such as, London, New York and Los Angeles . Each inkjet print holds a multilayered universe of art, protest and beauty. Street art is usually provoked by strong urges – be they political or cultural – and these photos document the essence of a place.

Wishner hopes his work will help viewers engage with their urban surroundings and become more aware of the art splashed across their cities.

“Art is critically important to social engagement and that’s why I do this,” he said.

The exhibit consists of more than twenty prints ranging in sizes 20″ x 30″ to nearly 40″ x 80″. “Mixed Message” will be on display until March 6, 2016 at Curatorial Assistance Gallery in the heart of Old Pasadena at 113 East Union Street.
