Find joy and inspiration at the Altadena Library on Saturday, April 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (break 2:30–3:00) when it hosts one of the largest local poetry readings in the community. This event celebrates the formal launch of the Altadena Poetry Review: Anthology 2017 published by the Altadena Library. Poets included in this publication are award winners, Pushcart Prize Nominees, Poets Laureate, writing teachers, editors, publishers, professors, and emerging authors. The poets, and the 160 poems in the book are multi-culturally diverse and represent a broad variety of styles: traditional, unrhymed, short, long, humorous, poignant, political, inspirational, experimental, and, “everything in between.”
Library Director Mindy Kittay describes the annual library program, known as the Poetry & Cookies event, as “much beloved by the community and another example of how libraries change lives by providing the tools, access and experiences that help each and every one of us reach our full potential.”
For the first time in the 15-year history of an Altadena poetry anthology, the creation of this book was led by co-editors: Elline Lipkin, Poet Laureate of the Altadena Library District 2016-2017; and Pauli Dutton, editor of the Poetry & Cookies Anthology, from which the Altadena Poetry Review evolved in 2015. The co-editors worked closely with a peer review panel of published poets and editors who discussed all submitted poems. The Anthology Selection Committee, all volunteers, include Tim Callahan, Gloriana Casey, Gerda Govine Ituarte, Briony James, Thelma T. Reyna (Library Poet Laureate, 2014–2015), and Elsa M. J. Seifert.
This year’s anthology and event were made possible by a generous donation of the Friends of the Altadena Library. Although the main library will be closed through April 30, 2017 for its Phase One Renovations, made possible through a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and assistance from the Altadena Library Foundation, it will be open for this exciting event. Just sit back and enjoy. Everyone is welcome! The Altadena Main Library is located at 600 East Mariposa Street, Altadena.
