Getting to Know the Presbyterian Church

When searching for a place to worship, it can never hurt to do a little research. After all, you want to attend a church that believes in and promotes the same things that you do.

If you’re not aware of the belief system of the Presbyterian Church, here’s a little history. Presbyterianism is a form of Protestantism. Presbyterians came to America hundreds of years ago and were known to form groups in the 1600s.

During the Revolutionary War, the Presbyterian Church actually participated in writing the state and national constitutions which brought in the concept of checks and balances as well as the separation of powers.

Now with almost two million members in the United States alone, the Presbyterian Church is known for its welcoming of all types of people, no matter their background.

So what do they believe? Unlike other churches, the Presbyterian Church elects certain people – known as elders – to administer the service. As with many Protestant-based religions, being a Presbyterian means believing in the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ and the six day creation of the world.

Many Presbyterians live by the concept of reformed theology which recognizes the faults of the Church throughout history but believes that the Church will persevere. It is often summarized by the acronym TULIP which stands for: total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints. This video explains more:

The Pasadena Presbyterian Church is Pasadena’s oldest church and continues the Presbyterian push for inclusivity.
