It looks good on paper any time you’re ranked No. 1 in a CIF-SS poll, and regardless of the sport.

But that doesn’t mean or guarantee you a thing once you get on the court.

It took every last drop of sweat from each La Salle player’s body to earn a spot in the CIF-SS Division 3 championship.

La Salle earned a gutsy, 5-set victory by scores of 15-25, 25-17, 26-23, 25-23 and 15-11 on Tuesday night to Sage Hill in Newport Coast.

Sofia Sanchez led the Lancers with 17 kills and 2 blocks.

Claire Forrest was also solid, as the senior finished with 15 kills and 4 blocks.

Sophia Anderson chipped in 9 kills and 21 digs.

Tori Ashkinos had 25 assists, and Vanessa Ramirez added 18 digs and 2 aces.

La Salle will face defending champion Sierra Canyon on Saturday at Cerritos College.

The Trailblazers (32-7) swept Westridge in the other CIF-SS Division 3 semifinal.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Tiare Tuitama: “I’m very proud of the girls. They represented La Salle tonight. I am proud of how they competed together as a team. A lot of credit to Sage Hill. They are very well coached and talented. Sage outplayed us in game 1, and then we did a tremendous job responding to win games two and three. Game three was the pivotal game for who was going to win this tonight. This was our first time going into a game five. We started with the lead in game five, and our goal was just to keep it! Our girls just wanted a little bit more than they did, and that’s why we are very fortunate to be moving on!”

La Salle senior Claire Forrest: “I’m so proud of all my teammates tonight, we really fought hard and worked together as a team. Our defense was strong and our offense was even stronger. We’ve worked so hard to get to this point and i can’t wait to battle Sierra Canyon in the finals.”
