Girls Volleyball: Westridge Grinds Out Another Prep League Road Victory, Downs Mayfield in 4-Game Battle

They don’t always make it look easy, but Westridge is getting important road victories in the Prep League marathon.

Last week, the Tigers won at Chadwick for the first time in nearly a decade.

Fast forward 72 hours, and Westridge took out the Cubs, 31-29, 23-25, 25-18, and 25-16 Monday night at Mayfield in a near two-hour match.

Allison Martinez continues to dominate, as the junior stud had 29 kills and 2 aces on Monday.

Makana Meyer has been ill, but she still found the courage to fight through it (the last two games) and had 11 kills.

Eryn Boken has become a quiet but lethal asset for coach Otto Lacayo, adding 12 kills and 2 aces.

Angelica Raymundo’s 55 assists led the way for Westridge (12-2, 5-1).

Said Lacayo: “We played through a tough environment. That Mayfield gym gets loud and you have to give that team (Mayfield) a ton of credit. Their setter (Ellie Watkins) really sparked their offense. Once we started playing our game, we were able to close it out. We showed a lot of mental toughness by winning back-to-back games on the road.”

Mayfield (7-5-1, 3-2) is young, but coach Stephen Bernabe said matches like Monday night will only make them better.

Watkins, as mentioned by the Westridge coach, had 22 assists, as the sophomore continues her stellar play.

Freshman Haley Eaves led the Cubs with 10 kills and 5 blocks, while libero Maeve Davitt had 18 digs.

“Allison Martinez was the difference maker,” Bernabe said. “She was a true prime-time player in pressure situations. We need matches like this to get the kind of experience we’re lacking as a young team. When we were in our system, we were pushing a lot of points in a row. Our serve-receive ended up being our downfall, but we battled very well.”

Mayfield will leave Thursday for Phoenix to play in the Nike Tournament of Champions over the weekend in Arizona.

The Cubs will get back and play huge road matches at Flintridge Prep and Poly on Oct. 4 and Oct. 7, respectively.

Westridge will host Flintridge Prep today (Tuesday) at 5:15, a couple weeks after sweeping the Rebels in La Canada.

Prep League Standings:

Poly (9-4 overall, 4-0 in league)
Westridge (12-2, 5-1)
Chadwick (6-4, 2-1)
Mayfield (7-5-1, 3-2)
Flintridge Prep (5-5-1, 2-2)
Rio Hondo Prep (5-10-1, 1-6)
Firebaugh (0-5, 0-5)
