Giving, Celebrating Traditions Marks a Joyous Christmas Season at Pasadena’s Mayfield Junior School

At Mayfield Junior School, opportunities both large and small are abundant throughout the year to serve others and experience joy. The Holy Child community transforms even more during Advent in preparation and celebration for the birth of Christ.

The Advent Prayer Service in early December kicked off the Holiday Season. Students gathered in School Families to pray, create Advent wreaths, and reflect on the meaning of Christmas.

School Families organized an Adopt-a-Family service-learning project to support 65 families at Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles. Before being delivered, the gifts were blessed at the on-campus Mother Mary Christmas Luncheon, a treasured tradition that began 50 years ago. Mayfield parents Tiffany Akasaki and Heather Chen served as event chairs.

Fellowship and shared reflections highlighted the Parents of Alumni Elves Workshop. For nearly 30 years, MJS sixth-graders have completed a sculpture project in the form of Christmas elves. Naturally, these precious portrayals often become keepsakes for parents. Art teacher Penny Wong graciously opened her classroom for alumni parents to work on elves that may need a little love and attention.

Kindergartners have performed the Nativity Play each year since the 1930s. The charming interpretation of the First Christmas is a holiday favorite among many at Mayfield.

First and second-graders began the festive performance schedule at an on-campus concert with renditions of “Let it Snow,” “Winter Wonderland,” and “O Come Let Us Adore Him.” Days later, the third through eighth-grade delighted the audience at St. Andrew’s Church.

Before departing for the Holiday Break, the Mayfield community came together for the annual Christmas Prayer Service.
