Kidspace is proud to announce the grand opening of its latest exhibit space, the Pepper Tree Music Jam. Open to the public on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., the Pepper Tree Music Jam is the first exhibit to be installed as a part of the larger Arroyo Adventure gardens enhancement which will be complete in Spring 2016. The Pepper Tree Music Jam will feature a wide assortment of percussion and wind instruments created from a selection of natural and everyday objects that produce a variety of beautiful sounds. The space has been designed to invite guests to develop an understanding, appreciation, and sensitivity for the music and sounds that are inherent in nature.

As a part of the festivities during grand opening weekend, Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, guests can make drums and shakers, participate in drum circles and jam sessions, and enjoy performances from special guests Will Thoren, professional didgeridoo player, on Saturday, November 7, and Kidspace-favorite Rhythm Child on Sunday, November 8. Performances will take place at 2:00 p.m., each day, in the Stone Hollow Ampthitheater. Guests are also welcome to join the museum for the official ribbon cutting at the new exhibit, located in the Kidspace Gardens, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, as well as participating in the very first jam session immediately following.

“The opening of the Pepper Tree Music Jam represents the realization of a longtime goal of the museum which is an exhibit experience that brings a permanent musical presence into our gardens,” said Lauren Kaye, Kidspace Assistant Director of Exhibits, “We are eager to see how this space sparks collaboration between children as they find their own beats with nature as their guide.”

The installation of the Pepper Tree Music Jam marks the initial stages of construction of the larger gardens enhancement project, Arroyo Adventure, that is set to open in Spring of 2016. Arroyo Adventure will feature 8 brand-new exhibit experiences, including the Pepper Tree Music Jam, that encourage children to connect with nature, engage in adventuresome play, and uncover possibilities between boulders and rocks, mud and sticks, trees and native plantings.

“The Pepper Tree Music Jam is a very gratifying first step and is only a small taste of the exciting and wonderful changes coming to the gardens in the next few months,” said Kaye.

The Pepper Tree Music Jam is a part of the next stage of the Museum’s exhibit master plan that was created in conjunction with the announcement of The Campaign for the Future of Kidspace in the spring of 2012. This $13 million capital campaign was launched to build new exhibits, upgrade existing learning environments, improve guest amenities, and develop new curriculum and programs. Other campaign improvements to Kidspace include The Robert & Mary Galvin Physics Forest, opened on July 12, 2012, the Imagination Workshop, opened on November 9, 2013, the S. Mark Taper Early Childhood Learning Center, opened on May 22, 2014, and the Kidspace Greenhouse, which opened on March 11, 2015.

Additional funding for the Pepper Tree Music Jam was provided, in part, by the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, their collective goal is to provide funding to programs that benefit the community through diverse music programs that nurture the study and appreciation of music, provide music as a vehicle towards health and healing, offer music education knowing that the study of music enhances other academic subjects, as well as cultural enrichment, and ensure that music is available to a broad range of audiences.
