Gunfire Erupts at Vigil For Friday’s Murder Victim as Mourners Are Attacked, One Person Shot

A group of about thirty mourners at a vigil for Friday night’s murder victim were apparently attacked and returned fire as a gun battle erupted Saturday night about 11:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Claremont Street, police said.

One woman, described by authorities as a 20-year-old black female, was shot twice. She is in stable condition Sunday morning, Pasadena Police Lt. John Mercado said, suffering from wounds to a forearm and to her stomach.

Mercado said details of the incident are sketchy and witnesses are not cooperating with the investigation.

A group had gathered to pay their respects to  Robert Arthur Calderon, 27, who was shot dead Friday night in what was reportedly a drive-by shooting in the 600 block of North Mentor Avenue.

The mourners apparently came under a gunfire attack from a group of unknown attackers, Mercado said.

Mercado said it appears as if members of the mourners’ group returned fire, due to physical evidence found at the scene.

The police investigation is on-going.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Pasadena Police Lt. Rojas at (626) 744-4517 or the Watch Commander at (626) 744-4620.
