It took just 70 seconds for the Pasadena City College football team to erase a 14-0 deficit in the first half Saturday in its SCFA National Northern Conference game against host Allan Hancock College. Hancock wouldn’t allow another breakdown and scored 38 unanswered points in a 52-14 rout over PCC at Righetti High School.

The Lancers fell to 2-7 overall and last place in the 7-team NNC at 1-4 in the NNC. Hancock upped its mark to 3-5 and 2-2.  It was PCC’s fifth straight loss.

Hancock totaled 352 rushing yards in a punishing ground game that netted five touchdowns and a 6.8 yards average in 52 carries. Javontres Autry scored three TDs while Jaylin Ammerson broke open for a 75-yard scoring carry to cap the Bulldogs’ victory. Hancock also scored on a 20-yard interception TD return by Willi Irabarren and a 70-yard TD punt return by Shaker Williams.

The Lancers only highlights occurred inside the final five minutes of the second quarter. First, PCC defensive back Idrissa Simpson forced a fumble that the Lancers recovered at the Hancock 35. That led to a 22-yard touchdown play on a screen pass by quarterback Trevor Hampton to running back Ahmad Springer.

On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Franklyn Cervanka hit an intentional short kickoff over the front coverage of Hancock’s special teams as Eugene Tripling recovered the ball for PCC at the Bulldogs’ 30. After a penalty and a few incomplete passes put the Lancers into a 4th down-and-16, Hampton lofted a 36-yard TD pass to a diving Ricky Blair. Cervanka’s second extra point tied it at 14-14 with 3:21 left before halftime.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, Hancock responded with a 12-play drive that led to a 37-yard field goal by Jose Morales. The kick with 11 seconds remaining in the half gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 17-14.

PCC’s most effective player was running back Timothy Jones, who carried 18 times for 94 yards and added two receptions for 22 yards. Blair added five receptions for 86 yards. Cervanka had a 67-yard punt from PCC’s own 1 in the second quarter. Top all-purpose yards maker and receiver J. Turner Jackson was limited to 40 yards in four catches and added 43 yards in kick returns.

On defense, linebacker Jalyn Williams made 11 tackles while fellow linebacker Sean Cowell totaled 10 tackles. Dejon Williams, who was the team’s starting quarterback during the first half of the season, played most of this game at cornerback and made three tackles while breaking up one pass. Marlon Dobbins broke up two passes, including one that prevented a Hancock touchdown.

The Lancers close out the 2014 season on Saturday, Nov. 8 with their Homecoming Game against Bakersfield College. Kickoff at Robinson Stadium is 4 p.m.
