Hundreds of Pasadena-area schoolchildren and their parents got the chance to start the upcoming school year in style and well prepared by receiving free backpacks filled with school supplies at Saturday’s Salvation Army Pasadena Tabernacle Corps annual Back to School event.

The event, held in conjunction with Sears, also featured the gifting of $75 worth of purchases at Sears for approximately 150 local students. Participating families also got the run of the entire Sears store an hour before the store’s official public opening time

The Pasadena Fire Department was at the event, too, with fun tours of a rescue ambulance and the chance for the students to talk with firefighters and see equipment up close.

“For many of these children, the opportunity for new clothes and new shoes are is not a common occurrence,” said Captain Masango of The Salvation Army. “Thanks to Sears and all of our other volunteers and supporters, these kids are going to get the head start to their school year they deserve.”
