Harlowe’s is the newest restaurant concept to grace the Pasadena dining scene. This understatedly classy space will charm you with its dark wood paneled interior and simply crafted menu. The name Harlowe’s comes from Clarissa Harlowe Barton, the great-great-great aunt of one of the founders, who helped found the Red Cross in Massachusetts. Her name pays homage to the early 1900s vibe of the restaurant.

“We really poured our heart and soul into this place,” said Alcazar. “[Harlowe’s] has been a dream of ours for a few years now.

Chefs Tony Alcazar and Brian Kiepler built a menu centered on the classic French Dip sandwich. “French dip is a very blue collar sandwich – it’s for everyone, anytime,” said Chef Alcazar. They focus on constructing the perfect sandwich with minimal ingredients and handcraft everything from the ketchup to the blue cheese slaw.

Their less-is-more approach to cooking is a flavorful respite from trendy restaurants that sacrifice taste for looks. Expect a hot, satisfying sandwiches, flavorful salads and creative entrees like Pheasant Sausage with black lentils and corn poblano rojas. The seasonal Marinated Tomato Salad is a prime example of their attention to detail. This salad features ripe heirloom tomatoes, crunchy slices of cucumber and red onions in a red wine vinaigrette, topped with oregano and Valbreso feta cheese.

“It’s a very simple sandwich with perfectly roasted beef, homemade au jus beef broth and soft French bread,” he said. Harlowe’s currently serves a bustling lunch crowd and are breaking into the dinner and late night dining scene.

In addition to a choice of four affordably priced French Dip sandwiches – roast beef, slow roasted pork dip, turkey dip and braised lamb dip – Harlowe’s has a distinctive beer menu. Since the owners also manage the Bottle Room in Whittier, it comes as no surprise that their alcohol program is top notch. Although they focus on locally made beers, they also carry Van Steerberg Van De Garre directly from Belgium. This Belgian Tripel is only available at Harlowe’s and The Bottle Room.

Aside from the Van De Garre, the Bread Pudding also appears on both menus. Chef Alcazar describes it as the perfect dessert – made with fluffy brioche bread, salted caramel and candied hazelnuts. The Chocolate Torte is another winning end to a meal. This decadent tasting flourless dark chocolate cake has a light texture and is complimented by milk chocolate ganache and a sauce made from caramelized blackberries and blueberries. It’s served with a dollop of maple sweetened chantilly cream and crushed hazelnuts.

Stay tuned for their grand opening. Harlowe’s French Dip is located at 43 East Union Street. Call (626) 535-0985  or visit https://www.beermenus.com/places/36371-harlowe-s-french-dip for their beer list. Their website is forthcoming at http://harlowesfrenchdip.com/.
