High Point Academy Celebrated 50 Years through Special Time Capsule Ceremony

High Point Academy, the independent and coeducational K-8 school in the Pasadena foothills, dedicated a time capsule in celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary which contains mementos from students of the 2016 school year. The capsule is expected to be opened in 2041 after 25 years and will be buried underneath a new student created mural.

“We will stash bits and pieces of things we love at High Point so people in the future can get a glimpse of what we enjoyed and what we felt was important,” said High Point Academy Headmaster Gary Stern.

Students eagerly gathered on the bleachers of the school field Friday morning to get a first hand glimpse of the roughly two foot by one foot aluminum box that would house their special mementos for two and a half decades to come.

Stern discussed the importance of a time capsule and the tradition is serves in many institutions. He referred to companies like Apple and visionaries such as Steve Jobs whose remarkable legacy was once documented when he put the first Apple computer mouse in a capsule in 1983 that was unearthed thirty years late in 2013.

“There’s more to a time capsule than leaving a remnant of who we are or what we like to do. We also leave our hopes for the future, one that’s even better than the present that we enjoy right now,” said Stern.

Each grade from K-8 contributed an item to place in the capsule that would remain until its unearthing for High Point Academy’s 75th anniversary. Items included a compass, an Iphone 4, photos of students, books, student made dvd footage that details life at High Point Academy and various handmade gizmos that represent the students of 2016.

“We happily welcome the opportunity to let other decades from now know what gave us joy and enriched our lives at High Point in 2016,” said Stern.

The curious nature of the students and the sense of wonder that comes from thinking about the future sparked interesting predictions that students included in the capsule. Their idea of life in 2041 included hyperloop trains, a solar powered planet, a United States female president, colonization of the moon and proving the existence of extraterrestrial life to name a few.

The time capsule is going to be buried during summer break in the campus’ main planter underneath the newly designed tiled mural in which every student at High Point had the opportunity to paint a tile throughout the present school year as a special way to commemorate the 50th Anniversary.

Only time will tell what the world will be like in 25 years, but future students of High Point Academy will be presented with a reminder of what life was like in 2016.

“What matters today are the wishes that we leave for the High Pointer’s of the future,” said Stern.
