Hillsides, a Southern California foster care charity, has received a $5,000 grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA). The grant will fund Hillsides music education program. The music program provides music classes and enrichment activities to the students of Hillsides Education Center, a therapeutic K-12 school for children with social-emotional, learning, and/or behavioral challenges.

“We are thankful that once again, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is supporting our music program,” said Hillsides President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa. “Research has shown that music education boosts children’s cognitive and social skills, especially in the areas of language, emotional intelligence and self-regulation. The development of these abilities is crucial to the successful education and growth of the children served at Hillsides.”

Hillsides Chief Advancement Officer Carrie Espinoza and Hillsides Education Center’s music teacher Rob Wherley accepted the grant at a grantee reception held at the 53rd Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Each year, the PSHA awards gifts and grants to a diverse list of nonprofit organizations to support their efforts in the community. Over the years, gifts and grants have included music education at all levels, music therapy for at-risk children, the underwriting of concerts, the purchase of instruments and uniforms, as well as other art programs.

The 2017 Pasadena Showcase House of Design tour is currently underway, ending May 21. This year’s Showcase House is a English Tudor designed by the prominent architectural firm of Marston & Van Pelt. Tickets can be ordered online at www.pasadenashowcase.org or by calling (714) 442-3872.
