Humane Society Hopes Families Will Adopt Their Own German Shepherd After Breed’s Big Win at Westminster

As 5-year-old, German shepherd Rumor was crowned Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last night, the six German shepherds currently awaiting adoption at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA howled in joy.

Buddy, a 1-year-old exuberant pup who loves tennis balls, couldn’t have imagined a better choice. It was reported that five-year-old A.J. danced circles in his kennel and six-year-old Steve squeaked his favorite toy in celebration. The other three German Shepherds joined in the festivities by treating all shelter residents to a round of dog cookies.

“It’s unusual to have so many German shepherds at our shelter at one time,” says Julie Bank, President/CEO of the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. “We hope that Rumor’s big win will inspire people to adopt a shepherd of their own.”

German shepherds are extremely intelligent dogs that make loyal family pets. Weighing in at between 75 and 95 pounds, German Shepherds are large breed dogs that require regular exercise and plenty of mental stimulation. The breed is easy to train and are very loyal to their owners, but may be wary of strangers and other pets. German Shepherds are great working dogs and are commonly employed as seeing eye dogs, police canines, drug sniffers, and as part of search and rescue teams.

The adoption fee for all dogs at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is $125 and includes the spay or neuter surgery, microchip and up-to-date vaccines. All adoptable pets can be viewed on the organization’s website at pasadenahumane.org/adopt.
