Pasadena Police booked a homeless man from the Pasadena area for suspicion of carjacking after he allegedly tried to unlock a woman’s car door as she waited for a gate to raise so she could drive into the parking garage for her residence Monday.

The 27-year-old victim was pulling up to the parking garage in the gated apartment complex where she lives and saw the suspect, Jose, Martinez, 32, standing by the gate, Pasadena Police Lieutenant Pete Hettema, said.

Police said Martinez walked up to her car, reached into the window and tried to unlock the car door. The victim told police there was a slight struggle as she pushed the suspect’s hand out of the car and tried to roll up the window.

Martinez then walked away from the car and left the location, according to Hettema.

When officers arrived on the scene, they were able to locate Martinez but he ran from police, Hettema said.

He was detained and taken into custody a short time later without incident.

Police say Martinez may have been under the influence of drugs.

Martinez is being held in county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
