UPDATED Saturday, July 16, 7:25 a.m. – The Pasadena Fire Department is reporting the body of a second man was found in the wreckage opf the Friday night accident. “One fatality initially and later into the incident once the box truck was removed from the crushed vehicle another body of an adult male was found,” Lisa Derderian reported. No identification of either man is available at this hour.

Five hours before Caltrans was scheduled to closed major portions of the I-210 Foothill freeway through Pasadena, a horrific car accident that killed one person and injured two shutdown the eastbound 210 at Sierra Madre Villa on Friday night at the height of rush hour.

The 4:57 p.m. wreck left one car crushed, one overturned, a truck straddling the concrete Gold Line train barrier and two others damaged, according to images from the scene.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, said Pasadena Fire Department spokesperson Lisa Derderian. No identification has yet been released of the deceased.

The California Highway Patrol shut down all traffic for almost an hour to allow both rescue ambulances and later, repair crews, to reach the scene.

Several people trapped in the backup suffered heat exhaustion and required medical attention, Derderian reported.

The Metro Gold line was shut down almost immediately after the accident, stopping service at Allen Avenue on the west and Sierra Madre Villa on the east, and bringing in shuttles to transport passengers around the damaged freeway.

The CHP opened the freeway shoulder to traffic first, then other lanes as possible, but the Sig Alert lasted until the Caltrans work shutdown of the freeway began at 10 p.m.

The Caltrans roadwork has resulted in the closing of the westbound Foothill Freeway (I-210) between Lake Avenue and Mountain Street in Pasadena this weekend, through to  Monday, July 18, at 5 a.m.

The eastbound SR-134 connector to the westbound I-210 will also be closed.
