About 1,000 Pasadena-area young women flocked to the Tournament House Saturday and Monday to audition to become a Princess — and perhaps, even Queen — of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court.

The 2019 Tournament’s Queen and Court Committee — a group that carefully vets the applicants and decide the members of the Royal Court — interviewed each young women and now gets down to winnowing down, in stages, the applicant’s pool to pinpoint the seven candidates that best fit their criteria.

This year’s Royal Court will be announced October 1.

Then, after a nail-biting three-week wait, will come the special moment when one of the Princesses will be crowned the 101st Rose Queen at the Pasadena Playhouse on October 23.

The tryouts took place Saturday and Monday.

The first round of interviews will only ask 250 applicants to return, while the second will bring back 75. The third round will narrow it to 25, and the next will determine the seven members of the Royal Court.

The Tournament points out that the selection process is not a beauty pageant.

During auditions, no questions were asked of the candidates. They had 15 seconds to make good first impressions in front of the Committee, whose members are looking for applicants who possess the right combination of academic achievement, confidence, public speaking skills, and overall personality.
