Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI), a leading biomedical research institute based in Pasadena, has recruited Orest Boyko, MD, PhD to be its new Director of Imaging Research.

Dr. Boyko was selected for the position after an extensive, international search following the retirement in June of HMRI’s long-standing leader of the program, Dr. Brian Ross. Dr. Boyko previously served as Professor of Radiology at USC Keck School of Medicine. During his academic career he was actively involved in patient care, residency and fellowship training, and research.

“HMRI is thrilled that Dr. Boyko brings his passion for these mainstays of academics to our expanding imaging program,” said Dr. Marie Csete, President and Chief Scientist of HMRI.

Dr. Boyko also brings a special interest in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and other new MRI-based technologies to the institutes, continuing a long tradition of excellence and innovation in these areas of imaging research.

“HMRI’s goal of bringing these new techniques of chemical imaging of the brain and other organs to greater application in medicine is perfectly aligned with Dr. Boyko’s interests and vision for the role of radiology expertise in clinical research and care. Since imaging is at the core of our new scientific strategic plan, Dr. Boyko was also chosen for his enthusiasm for collaborating across specialties,” added Csete.

HMRI recently installed a new 3T MRI machine which will be dedicated to clinical research under Dr. Boyko’s leadership. The machine is equipped with special coils to facilitate investigation into chemical processes at the cellular level, such as metabolism – advanced techniques that represent the next generation imaging tools.

Dr. Boyko, who received his MD and PhD degrees at the Indiana University School of Medicine, will lead a team at HMRI that includes Thao Tran, BS, ARMRIT, lead technologist; Cherise Charleswell, MPH, program coordinator; and David Gultekin, PhD, research physicist.
