Newcomer gourmet ice cream shop Salt and Straw, still settling into its new Old Pasadena digs, is starting the decade by offering up its Vegandulgence line as the highlight of its limited-edition Pints of the Month for January 2020.

In addition to Salt and Straw’s regular lineup, which already includes at least three vegan options, the dairy-free Vegandulgence line includes Lemon Cheesecake Crumble, blending “the loveliest cheese around” with coconut yogurt and lemon zest for a tart cheesecake swirl, and an almond crumble reminiscent of Graham cracker crust. The satin cheesecake gets layered into a salted vanilla coconut ice cream.

Banana and Peanut Butter Tofu Pudding is a study of the amazing silkiness of tofu, blending the traditional type from Ota Tofu with peanut butter for a dense, addictive pudding, which is then piped throughout a creamy banana gelato made velvety by soy milk.

Sunflower Butter Cups feature roasted sunflower butter that lends depth to sweetened coconut cream, with shards of organic chocolate stracciatella and marionberry jam folded in for a deconstructed buttercup.

Toasted Oat Milk and Cookies are gluten-free toasted oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and ganache dunked into ice cream for the ultimate oat milk and cookies experience.

Salt and Straw’s Rocky Road with Aquafaba Marshmallows rely on that liquid left from cooking beans, which mimics the structure of egg whites when whipped. The flavor is made with glossy, pillowy marshmallows and candied sunflower seeds, blended in a luxurious chocolate ice cream.

The artisans creating these concoctions at Salt and Straw, which opened in Pasadena just last November, is led by Tyler Malek, who’s known for working with local products and a menu that’s at least 20-percent vegan.

The “taste-provoking” ice cream maker also offers their Black Olive Brittle and Goat Cheese, Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie Dough, Roasted Strawberry and Toasted White Chocolate, and those other provocative, evocative flavors that have powered the company into the San Gabriel Valley.

Salt and Straw is located at 39 West Colorado Blvd. It is open daily, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
