Iconic and Important, La Loma Bridge Set to Close in July for 18 Months of Retrofitting

Pasadena residents who regularly traverse the iconic La Loma Bridge over the Arroyo Seco will have to start planning new routes soon to avoid any disruption of their schedules once the bridge is closed in July for major repair work.

The city’s Department of Public Works will only say the anticipated closure should occur in July but has not given any specific date. Utility relocations by Pasadena Water and Power and other agencies have started, however, and will continue throughout this month.

The city government had earlier consultated with residents and organizations projected to be impacted by the impending closure, although those consulted are waiting for final and specific dates.

West Pasadena Residents’ Association President Geoffrey Baum said that while his organization supports the project, the closure “will inconvenience many of us who travel across the bridge every day. For that reason we have asked the City to announce when — exactly — the bridge will close and share the construction schedule it has set.”

The construction will close one of only four bridges across the Arroyo south of the Rose Bowl and the one central bridge that serves many West Pasadena neighborhoods. The work on the 101-year-old bridge may require over 18 months to complete, according to city documents.

During construction traffic will be detoured to other bridges across the Arroyo Seco. Residents will be able to cross using the Colorado Boulevard Bridge to access areas north of La Loma Bridge, and will be able to use the San Rafael Bridge to access areas south of La Loma Bridge. The Department of Public Works is creating a traffic management plan to assist the flow of traffic.

The bridge was structurally analyzed for seismic adequacy in 2000, and was found inadequate to withstand the effects of a major earthquake.

“The West Pasadena Residents’ Association supports the La Loma bridge retrofit and renovation project,” Baum said. “We are grateful to the City officials and engaged neighbors for ensuring that the project is completed it in a way that respects the bridge’s historic design.”

The La Loma Bridge Project, with a total estimated cost of $16 million, is a collaborative effort between the City of Pasadena and California Department of Transportation, and will involve replacement of the bridge deck, rehabilitation of the arches and spandrel columns, and strengthening of the end piers. Funding consists of $13.3 million in federal funds and $2.7 million in city funds.

Built in 1914, the La Loma Bridge earned a place in the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 2004.
